Natural statins and stroke risk.

چکیده
The Burden of Stroke In the United States, '600 000 persons experience a clinical stroke (first or recurrent) annually.1 Although the case-fatality rate has declined over the past decades, it is still high. The annual death toll is '150 000, which qualifies stroke as the third leading cause of death, behind coronary heart disease (CHD) and cancer. The clinical sequelae of a stroke are often devastating. Among the more than 3 million stroke survivors, approximately one half have hemiparesis, one third are clinically depressed, one quarter cannot walk, and one sixth are aphasic.2 Stroke is the leading cause of serious disability in the United States.1 Thus, evidence of promising preventive therapies that can reduce the human and societal costs of stroke is welcome news.

Statins for stroke prevention: disappointment and hope.
The occurrence of stroke increases with age, particularly affecting the older elderly, a population also at higher risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Epidemiological and observational studies have not shown a clear association between cholesterol levels and all causes of stroke. Nonetheless, large, long-term statin trials in patients with established CHD or at high risk for CHD have shown t...

متن کاملLipid management in the prevention of stroke: review and updated meta-analysis of statins for stroke prevention.
Despite the inconsistent or weak association between cholesterol and stroke, lowering of cholesterol concentrations with statins reduces the risk of stroke in high-risk populations and in patients with non-cardioembolic stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Statin therapy is the most important advance in stroke prevention since the introduction of aspirin and antihypertensive treatments. Meta-a...
متن کاملEffect of pretreatment with statins on ischemic stroke outcomes.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Statins reduce the risk of stroke in at-risk populations and may improve outcomes in patients taking statins before an ischemic stroke (IS). Our objectives were to examine the effects of pretreatment with statins on poor outcome in IS patients. METHODS Over a 6-month period all acute IS admissions were prospectively identified in 15 hospitals participating in a statewid...

Stroke is widely effect on health quality around the world. High incidence of stroke, make this disease as a problem for health providers. Recently, some advantages of statins about prophylaxis from stroke incidence and neuroprotective effects are discussed. Beyond the lipid lowering effect of statins, these drugs have other benefits for patients that have risk factors of stroke or chance of re...
متن کاملStatins for the Prevention of Stroke: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
BACKGROUND Stroke is a frequently encountered clinical event that has a detrimental impact on the quality of life. Evidence has increasingly shown that statins can substantially reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. However, it remains to be determined whether statins are definitively effective in preventing stroke. METHODS We systematically searched the PubMed, Embase, and Central datab...
